How To Prepare Your Child For An Assessment

What is involved and what will I (or my child) be required to do?

You (or your child) will be asked to do do several paper and pencil type tasks as well as practical problem-solving tasks.  Some tests will involve talking and answering questions, while others will involve using your hands and working with pictures or puzzles. There are also questionnaires to complete. Our tests are carefully chosen, sensitive, validated and well-researched. Depending on the complexity of the assessment, the one-to-one testing component takes between 3 and 8 hours. Each session lasts between one and three hours, so several visits are usually required.

How do I prepare for an assessment?

Please try to have a good nights rest on the night before the evaluation and a healthy breakfast before coming in. If you are an adult undergoing an assessment, please refrain from consuming any alcohol or illicit drugs at least three days before the assessment.

What do I tell my child before coming in for an assessment?

We suggest to describe in general what will be involved in the testing process. For example:  “You will be doing some tests to find out how you think and learn — you will be asked to answer questions, draw, and do puzzles. Some of the tests will be like the things that you do in school and others will be more like games. This will help us understand how your teachers can best teach you at school and also help you and your Mom and Dad [or caregiver] work better together at home.”

What should I bring to the assessment?

For the first meeting, please bring the following:

  • Doctor’s referral (recommended)
  • Recent report cards or university transcripts
  • Individual Education Plan (if applicable)
  • Previous psychological or neuropsychological assessment reports
  • Previous therapy reports
    • Occupational Therapy, Psychotherapy, Speech and language

For breaks, please bring a snack and a beverage. We provide filtered water and free coffee or tea. There are also several places in the village to buy snacks.

How much does an assessment cost?

After an initial consultation, an estimate of the cost of the assessment will be given. The cost is determined by the complexity of the case and amount of hours estimated for the assessment, interpretation and report writing. Accepted payments include cash, cheques, Visa/Mastercard or INTERAC e-transfer. We do not currently accept debit cards. Please check with your insurance company to determine whether coverage is provided. We do not currently do assessments for medical-legal purposes. Please contact us for more information.
